Creating a successful directory

How to create a successful directory

Author: Brett Hull
I write this article just days before I will launch my directory-hosting-site. The site will make it easier and cheaper for people that wants to make a directory site without any money and and knowledge. It will make life very easy for everyone that wants to create directories and edit them. I will however write about directories in generall not just for the ones that's want to have them on my site. What's a directory?

A directory is a site that includes organized links. It's organized by following: startpage->categories->links. The most known directory is Dmoz. Why do I need a directory? Directories can in many way be a good resource for your website. It makes it interactive. But you can ofcourse have many other reasons to create it.What is your main reason for creating one? Is it to make a valueable resource for a specific group of people, is it because you want to get more visitors or is it simply just because you want to earn some money by putting up ads in it? Whatever your reason are, try to get it all based under this.

In other words, If you run Ferrari site and want to get a valueable resource for your user than try to get a directory with design that fits your target group and add categories after your users main interests. Every serious site and directory have a speciall target group. The succesfullness is more or less how good you are on customizing it after your target. If you want to get more visitors than use reciprocal links.

That will give you a link back on every site that submit in your directory. It will also raise your chance for your site to show up in searches. If you simply want to get money than you need high traffic. A reciprocal linkdirectory combined with relevant ads would do the job. But than again, a valueable resource got a bigger chance to become popular and gain traffic than some spam-attempt.How do I put up relevant ads?

I suggest to try out the google adsense adsystem. It is probably the worlds most used relevant adsystem. Your income on that depends on how much the advertiser is ready to pay you. Link: http://www.google.com/adsense/ Good luck!

Dmoz Clones

Why Search Engines Purging ODP Clone Websites

Author: nameeta kashyap
There are lot of websites which are fully or partially clone of ODP (Open Directory Project). These websites or part section of websites, which are using ODP script to reformat the data on there site are useless and they have no original new contents. It is learnt that search engine specially Google is purging or banning such kind of sites. Why search engines are against Dmoz clone sites? Is the data in them not worthwhile or are they been misused by site owner's? We will try to find our reason, but before that let us first understand all about Dmoz Directory
What is Dmoz Directory (ODP)The Open Directory Project is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory on the web.

It is owned by "Time Warner" and constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors, and is truly unique in many ways. The Open Directory, also known as DMOZ (the domain name of ODP), is a large, categorized directory of websites and pages, which is staffed by volunteers. Every website and page that is added to the directory has to be manually reviewed before it is included. Since its index is manually constructed and edited, categorization and relevancy is superior to any other index of its kind and equally as unique, is the fact that this data is open and free to the public for replication. As of July 2005, ODP had about 4.6 million listings organized into over 580,000 categories derived from the contributions of some 69,000 editors.

How is this free data been used to make Dmoz Clone? There are a lot of ODP scripts to make clone of the ODP. These scripts enables you to add live data of the Open Directory Project at dmoz.org to your own website using a very easy to customize template based system. Users can browse and search categories of websites. These scripts that grabs live contents of the Open Directory dynamically and formats them to make your own version of the Open Directory. These are small scripts have few files to just uploaded on your server and you can get Thousands of Dmoz directory pages on your site in your own templates design. These scripts just get live data from Dmoz.org and it has no original new contents.

Does Dmoz Clone bring traffic?Webmaster do not like Dmoz clone websites as they have not original content rather have duplicate contents and no body will like to link a site or vote a site which has duplicate contents. Most people will not even browse your directory. Most people will just browse 2-10 pages of your directory, they will just leave and never come back.

Why Search Engines are against Dmoz Clone? There are various reasons which are explained as:
There is no Original Content which is required to make a Quality Site.

Duplicate contents as all scripts extract live data from Dmoz and create thousands of similar pages on the web.

The Dmoz directory has more than 580,000 categories If thousands of site will grab the live contents from Dmoz it will results into creation of millions of similar pages which is making web a junkyard of similar pages with nothing new.

The Dmoz clone sites has thousands of pages created on fly with no extra hardwork and lot of spammer are using it for advertising or Google adsense program
The lot of webmaster has just created a section of Dmoz to get inbound links from thousands of pages to increase link popularity and search engine ranking
Text link advertiser also created Dmoz clone to sell links on thousands of pages to increase artificially link popularity of text link ads buyers.

Which kind of Dmoz clone Search Engine's will LikeSearch engines are concerned with presenting quality results to there users If you can modify and enhance the data retrieved from Dmoz and present in unique format it will definitely be preferred by Search Engines, Webmaster and Web Surfers. Google has got its own directory for which it has got data from Dmoz but enhanced by Google technology i.e ranking of sites on each directory page by Page Rank.Using ODP Clone Scripts just to make simple odp clone will get your site banned from search engines due to duplicate contents.

Therefore it is advised not to use this virtually useless script on important sites or sites that rank well on search engines. Lot of ODP Clone Scripts makers sites were banned, because too many websites with duplicate content ( as they all have Dmoz clone) were linked to them. These scripts owner require there site URL to be linked at the footer as "Powered by ..." Which results into link farming or inbound links from similar pages. Therefore if you want your site or directory to be safe and run for longer times then have original and unique contents in it which will not only make it rank but also get good traffic on your site and increase its popularity.About the Author

Web Directories

Web Directories

The Value of Web DirectoriesAuthor: S. Housley

Web Directories ExplainedBy S. HousleyWeb directories are an important component to search engine positioning. Directories come in all shapes and sizes, some are generic, while others are highly specialized. Directories, are defined as categorized topics or collections of information organized into a tree like structure where categories are used to define each groups association.Large directories like Yahoo tend to have general themes and may charge for listings. While smaller niche directories like http://www.finance-investing.com offer free listings and profit from advertising revenue or pay per click models like Google AdSense.Being listed in a directory not only brings in targeted traffic, it provides a one-way link from a website with similar content. Directories are generally highly ranked in search engines, and are considered well respected resources, two traits that are desirable in link partners.

While smaller directories that focus on a specific niche might generate less traffic, the quality of the traffic from a niche site is usually highly targeted and will be superior to that generated from general search engines. If you are selling fire alarms, traffic from yahoo will be less qualified than traffic from Alarm Tools, http://www.alarm-tools.net . Most visitors to Alarm Tools will have a genuine interest in alarms and alerting systems. The nature of highly specialized directories result in visitors who have a serious interest in the directories theme, or a at the very least an interest in a theme related to the directory. As a result, web publishers need to make a conscience effort not to ignore the value of directory listings.

Regardless of their size, a related niche directory listing can be extremely valuable. Many directories offer sponsorship opportunities. Vendors can optionally purchase sponsorship to increased their exposure with a bold listing or top category listings.Determining a Directories ValueIt is difficult to assess the value of directory listing, as there is an obvious advantage to a listing of a closely related theme directory that is difficult to measure and quantify. In general, webmasters can use common web guidelines to determine the popularity of a directory and assess the directory link's value. To assess the value of a web directory, consider the PageRank of the webpage where the link placement of your site will occur.

The PageRank is indicative of how important Google may find a specific page. Another reliable third party measuring tool is Alexa. The Alexa ranking provides insight into how popular a website is. In general, a link from a web page containing a PageRank of 5 or higher is considered very good. A link from a site in Alexa's top 100,000 is also generally very desirable.Compare the following two directories' Monitoring Toolshttp://www.monitoring-tools.net and RSS Specificationshttp://www.rss-specifications.com .

Monitoring Tools' main page has a PageRank of 5 but most internal pages that contain links have low page ranks and the overall Alexa ranking of the site is over 650,000. While RSS Specification's claims a main Google PageRank of 6 and subpages all contain a minimum of a 5 for PageRank, the overall site is ranked 32,000.Clearly if you are in the syndication business, RSS Specification's would be a very desirable link partner, while you would have to weigh the cost benefit and position of a link from Monitoring Tools. To determine a sites PageRank without downloading the Google Toolbar, use the following online tool from RustyBrick

http://www.rustybrick.com/pagerank-prediction.php .A website's Alexa ranking can be found by entering the URL into Alexa http://www.alexa.com .It is recommended that PageRank and Alexa ranking be only used as a guide when determining a directories reputation. It is important not to get too caught up in either Google PageRank or Alexa Ranking as webmasters can use "tricks" to artificially inflate their numbers. The bottom line, links from directories that are small but niche, can provide quality web traffic.

List of directories

Get listed in Dmoz

Get listed at DMOZ

Author: Jakob Jelling
By Jakob Jellinghttp://www.sitetube.comWhen you are deciding on the major search engine directories that you want your website to be listed in, you should not overlook one of the most important ones: the DMOZ (short form for Directory Mozilla). DMOZ is just another name for the Open Directory Project, one of the human-powered submission directories. The Open Directory Project (http://www.dmoz.org) was designed and is currently operated by a volunteer group of web editors and reviewers.

It will not cost you a dime to get listed on DMOZ but before you submit your website to the Open Directory Project for review, you will need to be certain it is developed with DMOZ standards in mind. You will need to go through all of your web pages to make sure that your website is elegant and professional. Your website design should be already completed at the time you make the submission. That means that the design of every single web page should be finished. Unfinished websites will be rejected. Also make sure that your website contains valuable and relevant information or your website will get rejected. One of the benefits of being listed with the Open Directory Project is that your website will sooner or later appear in other search engines like Google and Yahoo.

This happens because the DMOZ listings are used by numerous search engines and directories, including Google. The submission process is relatively uncomplicated. Your first step is to visit the website of Open Directory Project: http://www.dmoz.org. You will be able to select a category and subcategories for your website and add your website’s URL. Make sure that you selected the correct category and subcategory. Incorrect selection may result in longer waiting period or rejection.

Also read and follow the provided instructions and requirements very carefullyThe title and description that you submit should be carefully prepared and reviewed to make sure they accurately describe the content and the main theme of your website. If DMOZ editors will disagree with your description or title, they can either change it or completely reject your website. It may take some time (sometimes 6 months or more ...) before your website will show up in the Open Directory Project.

However, do not resubmit your website during the waiting period as this can only result in a longer delay or get your website rejected. Be patient and regularly check the status of your submission by doing the search on DMOZ. If your website does not get listed for a long period of time or gets rejected, you can also check on the status of the submission or the reasons for the rejection by contacting the editors for the subcategory that you selected.

Yahoo ranks explained

How The Yahoo! Directory Really Ranks Its Director

Author: Michael Wong
Last Update: Tuesday, January 04, 2005.In this article, I show you how the Yahoo! Directory ranks its listings, so you can use this knowledge to get higher rankings.First you must understand that Yahoo! is a web directory, NOT a search engine. So what is the difference?Well, search engines, such as Google, index web pages by sending a spider or crawler out to the web to find, crawl and index web pages. When a spider finds a web page, it will typically index the contents of the page's TITLE tag, the body text and sometimes the META tags.A search engine will use the contents of the TITLE tag as the link title in the search results.

The description for a link may consist of the contents of the META description tag, or excerpts from the body text.On the other hand a web directory, such as the Yahoo! Directory, does not use spiders to find, crawl and index web pages. Instead it relies on web site owners to submit their web sites for indexing. Here's the important part... so listen carefully! ;o)The Yahoo! Directory will ONLY use the information submitted via its How to Suggest Your Site submission form to create the directory listing title and description. D

id you catch that? The 4 ranking factors are:Site title Domain name / URL Directory category Site description The submission is then reviewed by a human reviewer to ensure the information submitted is appropriate. Quite often a site reviewer will edit the submitted information to fit its own editorial guidelines.Yahoo! NEVER sends out spiders to gather information from your web site. So no amount of optimization to your web pages will have any effect on your Yahoo! Directory listing's rankings.

What this means is that the fate of your site's ranking in the Yahoo! Directory is dependent on the information you submit in its site submission form.In addition, once your site has been accepted into the Yahoo! Directory, you are stuck with the listing title, description and ranking.Unless there is an error in the listing title or description, or your site has changed completely, Yahoo! will NOT entertain any changes to the listing. This is straight from the horses mouth. If your listing has an error on it, you can make a change request using Yahoo!'s How to Suggest a Change to Your Yahoo! Listing form.

Don't forget that Yahoo! charges an annually recurring fee of $299, for as long as you want your listing in their directory. For adult web sites, the fee is a whopping $600!This is why it is essential that you get it right when you submit your site to the Yahoo! Directory. Because once you've made your submission, you have to live with your Yahoo! Directory listing for years to come. With the Yahoo! Directory being the most popular directory on the Web, the results could play a major part on the success of your web site.

I hope that has cleared up the confusion that optimizing your web site can improve your Yahoo! directory listing rankings. It won't!You may like to read my search engine optimization book, entitled "Search Engine Optimization Strategies."Remember, you only have one shot at getting your Yahoo! submission right!

Yahoo tips

Yahoo submitting tips

Author: David Callan
By David CallanGetting listed on Yahoo should be without doubt one of the most important missions on any Internet marketers mind.Yahoo is the biggest of all the search engines, well actually that's not true, you see Yahoo is not technically a search ENGINE it is a human compiled directory of websites that does not have a spiderbot going to sites and indexing them. However for the sake of this article when I say search engines I am referring to all 'search sites'.Did you know that recent estimates show that Yahoo is currently capturing an amazing 40% of all search engine traffic online? Do you know what this means? It means that almost 1 out of every 2 people that do searches on the Internet use Yahoo, everyone on the Internet has done searches some time or another.Nothing in the world should be clearer to anyone with a website whose just after reading the above figures.

You need your site listed in Yahoo. ASAP.To recap if your site is not listed in the Yahoo index you're losing lots of potential customers to competitors that are listed in Yahoo. With the amount of visitors Yahoo can send you even with an average listing this could amount to hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars worth of lost profit. Lost profit is never good in business. A point to note here is that being listed under webpages does not mean you're listed in Yahoo, it in fact means you're listed with Google because Yahoo gets webpage results from Google. You now know how important it is to be listed in Yahoo.

Let's move on to the good stuff, the main body of this Yahoo submitting tips article - how to submit to Yahoo. First you've to determine the scope of your site. Is your site commercial or noncommercial? Commercial sites that want to be listed by Yahoo now must use "Business Express" when submitting. This service previously cost a once off figure of $199, however the price has since risen to $299 a year. "Business Express" what is it? Good question and one that many people ask, well it's basically the same as free submit except that with business express your site is guaranteed to be reviewed within a week's time.

Please be aware however that it does not guarantee that your site will be accepted and added to the Yahoo index, it simply guarantee's a timely review of your application. If your site is rejected Yahoo will allow you to appeal for free within a certain time scale (usually 30 days) of being informed of your rejection. Yahoo staff usually include in your rejection the reasons you have been rejected. You should examine these reasons and fix any problems then resubmit after a week or so.

If your site is a noncommercial entity, you'll still be able to submit for free, but a review could take as long as 8 weeks or might never happen at all. Before you submit make sure your site is 100% ready, under construction pages need not apply to Yahoo because they're not going to get in. Your site should be aesthetically pleasing to the reviewer, be quick loading and of course should have lots of good content.

Dmoz Guide

Open Directory Project guide

Author: David Callan
By David CallanThe Open Directory Project (ODP) based at http://www.dmoz.org is perhaps the most important directory any webmaster can submit a site to these days. Even more important than Yahoo? You might ask. Well yes in my opinion anyway, you see the ODP, formally known as NewHoo not only operates its directory from its headquarters at dmoz.org but also supplies its directory data to such big player engines as Google, AOL search, Netscape Search, Lycos and Hotbot to name just a few.

In addition to these 'mainstream' engines hundreds of other sites also use ODP's data. This means that a listing in the ODP directory will enable your site to show up for searches done on any engines or sites which use the Open Directory Projects data, provided of course your title and description are optimized for the searched terms. The fact that lots of third party search engines and sites use ODP data is the main attraction of applying for a listing with them. The main attraction is not as one might think to be found at searches done at dmoz.org.

Dmoz.org itself receives only a tiny percentage of the traffic that sites such as Google and Lycos receive. In particular, a listing in the ODP directory can be very advantageous for sites wishing to rank high in the Google search engine. Google not only uses the Open Directory Projects data for the Google Directory located at http://directory.google.com but it also 'mixes' the data with its own to determine where sites should be ranked in the search results.

A listing in the ODP will help boost Googles view of how important your site is (ie. boost your Pagerank) and hence help to increase your ranking for your chosen keywords and key phrases. Presumably you now know that getting listed in the ODP is very important. Getting a listing is not hard, it does sometime take a little time but it's not hard and what's more it's completely free. This article is your guide to submitting to the Open Directory Project.

A few pre requirementsBefore I continue on and tell you how to submit your site I'm first going to tell you not to bother.. IF your site doesn't meet a few pre-requirements that is. I believe these pre-requirements to be very important to the ODP and almost all other directories.Firstly your site must be finished. That means no fancy 'under-construction' graphics with smiling builders waving their hammers back and forth on them, ODP editors don't care if you know how to use a free animated GIF's directory, either do I for that fact. That means no broken links, how do you expect an editor to review your site if he or she can't first view it.

That means fast or average page loading times, editors are busy editing their chosen category, they don't have the time or the patience to wait for an eternity to see your site load. Secondly your site should be unique and contain useful content. This means that your site should not be a mirror site with the exact same content as another site listed already within the directory. This means that your site should not be simply an affiliate farm designed specifically to promote products of other companies.

Thirdly and finally, your site should not be an illegal underground type site, ODP editors will simply move on to the next submission if they come across a site like this. Remember the ODP is a directory just like Yahoo and Looksmart so real people will visit your site, these people are experts in their chosen fields and can spot quality sites when they see them. If your site is of poor quality then I'm sorry but your rejected - "Next!!!"

Gimpsy interview

Interview With Gimpsy Founder - Mordechai Chachamu

Author: David Wallace
Interview With Gimpsy Founder - Mordechai ChachamuGimpsy is a different kind of directory, listing only sites that provide online activity or help you accomplish a specific task. Gimpsy founder, Mordechai Chachamu explains why. DW: It only takes a cursory glance at your home page to appreciate that it is quite different from all other directories out there. Perhaps we can start with some background about you and Gimpsy. When, why and how did it all begin?MC: The inspiration to Gimpsy came way back in 1999.

As is the case with many other inventions – it came out of frustration with existing technology. I was trying to buy something on the net and used the search engines to get to the right site. I spent many hours and visited many sites without success. I started to think "WHY can't I get the results that I want?" and it occurred to me that the reason is that the search engines don't UNDERSTAND what I want! "But is there a way to MAKE them understand?" It was then that the idea of Gimpsy was born.

Gimpy is built so that once you have made your INTENTION clear – it provides you with a list of sites where you can accomplish them.DW: How was Gimpsy funded?MC: After the flash of inspiration, I naturally thought that people would just fall over themselves trying to secure a slice of the golden pie. As an MBA graduate, I knew what I was supposed to do, business plan and all. The time was the height of the dot com boom and the world was awash with entrepreneurs like me trying to secure funding.

I nearly made it – but the promised funds never materialized. Then came the big crush, and with it the realization that Gimpsy will become a reality only if I will make it so. Using my (very modest) savings and help from my family, we managed to get where we are now. We would welcome interest from investors, but Gimpsy's survival is now assured. DW: What is it that makes Gimpsy so unique?MC: The most fundamental difference is the categorization model. Every directory follows the footprints of the first major directory – Yahoo. The home pages of all the directories look virtually identical – they all have 'Arts', 'Business', 'Computers', 'Health', 'Science', etc. A Yahoo style Editor that reviews a site tries to answer the question: What is this site ABOUT?A Gimpsy Editor, on the other hand, has a different question in mind. He or she asks "What can the user DO on this site?"

Thus, the home page of Gimpsy simply lists VERBS, like 'buy', 'design', 'play', 'subscribe', 'trade', etc. DW: The slogan "Active Sites for Active People" is related to Gimpsy containing sites that provide an interactive online service. Can you expound on this further, explaining what kind of sites are actually included in Gimpsy?MC: Gimpsy is highly selective when it comes to site acceptance. It will only accept sites for which the question "what can I DO here" is relevant. If the answer is 'reading', the site is not accepted, irrespective if the information if of the highest quality and the content is the most authoritative in the field.

Some Site Owners find it very hard to accept. DW: OK, but how does this help the searcher?MC: By insisting on accepting only sites that provide online activity, the user gets a unique search experience at Gimpsy - 100% relevant results! Just browse any category at Gimpsy and it will become obvious. For example, Buy > clothes > uniforms > sports or Learn > how to > use the Internet or Order > personalized > songs & videos, they all present the user with a list of sites where the desired goal can be achieved – online, no 'ifs', 'ands' or 'buts'. A great insight into the variety of areas included in Gimpsy can be seen at the Category of the week page, that holds all the categories that were nominated in the past. DW:

In your publications you keep emphasizing the 'Natural Language' search method. Why do you think that Gimpsy will succeed where giants like Ask Jeeves have failed?MC: Gimpsy is the only general purpose directory where you can enter a 'normal' English phrase and get relevant results. For instance, try entering 'buy sport uniform', 'learn how to use the Internet' or 'order personalized song'. As I said, you just tell Gimpsy what you want to DO online – and it will show you which sites provide that service.

For more examples, see http://www.gimpsy.com/gimpsy/searcher/examples.php, where the last 15 Natural Language queries are kept.DW: It's easy to see that every site in the category 'Learn > how to > use the Internet' would be relevant to any user interested in that activity, but surely not all sites in 'Order > fast food' would be. After all, a New York based pizzeria will not deliver their freshly baked pizza to Chicago. How do you overcome the geographical restriction?MC: We just take it into account. Any user, even if not registered with Gimpsy, can set his/her 'Preferences', which include the selection of their 'Location'.

Once the location is chosen, Gimpsy will show only sites that are relevant to that location! No other global Search Engine or directory is able to deliver localized search results anywhere near the accuracy of Gimpsy. DW: But how can you tell?MC: As part of the editorial review of every site, the Editor is asked to determine the site's 'Coverage'. In other words, to answer the question: Which areas in the world are being serviced by the site? It is a common experience among the non-USA Internet users to find a great site that has just the right merchandise and the right price. Only after placing the order and entering the Credit Card details they discover the 'so sorry – we only ship within the USA' notice. You will never have such an experience at sites found at Gimpsy.DW: That must be very time consuming!MC: Indeed it is. I have nothing but admiration to the amazing work that our Editors do.

Being a Gimpsy Editor is far from easy and requires a lot of training and dedication. That is one of the reasons that we do not use volunteers. DW: Can you explain how the "My Gimpsy" feature works?MC: This section is for users that wish to make the most out of the directory. Following a simple registration process (in fact – VERY simple), they gain access to an online form that allows them to communicate directly to the Gimpsy Team. Most importantly, perhaps, is the access to the 'Favorites' facility. As the name suggests, you can add sites to your 'Favorites' collection, similar to your browser's Favorites.

Unlike the browser, when you select a site from Gimpsy to be added to your Gimpsy favorites, it retains its classification in your private collection! For example, say you found a great site in the category 'Buy > home & garden > pool & spa > sauna'. If you decided to keep it in your favorites, it will be entered there under the same categorization. Even if you have amassed a large collection (and some users have accumulated hundreds of sites), it is always easy to find them again.DW: What else can a user do to fine-tune the search results?MC: In addition to the usual 'Preferences', many categories have additional 'attributes'. It would be easier to explain by example. In the category Buy > home & garden > window covering there are now 49 sites (assuming Location is set to USA).

On the right hand side, there is a drop-down list titled 'Covering Style'. Clicking on it brings up various types of windows covering, such as blinds, curtains etc. If you select 'shutters' the list of sites will shorten dramatically and you will see just 9 sites. Thus, if you were looking to buy shutters for your windows online – you now have a perfect list!DW: Is Gimpsy more "spider friendly" than other directories? If so, how?MC: That would depend on your definition of 'spider friendly'. Do you mean the extent of indexing of the directory pages by Search Engines?DW: Yes.MC: Well, in that case, you can get an objective indication for it at the directory section of Strongest Links.

From about 80 directories, Gimpsy is ranked 7th in the world (at the moment) in total 'Saturation'. But that's not the full picture. If you check the 'info' page of the leading directories, you will see that Gimpsy is much more 'balanced' than many other directories and is indexed well in all the Search Engines. The advantage for site owners is that a site listed in Gimpsy is likely to be spidered and indexed by many Search Engines – not just Google. As you know, getting indexed by some Search Engines is a notoriously long process, unless you are willing to pay for inclusion.DW: Does Gimpsy contribute to the PageRank of sites listed in it?MC: Indeed it does. First, unlike many other directories, Gimpsy allows sites to be listed in several categories, which means that a site may have several links to it.

In addition, each site has its own detailed information page, which links only to it. Many sites can see their back link from Gimpsy at Google, even though the home page has, at the moment, a PageRank of just 6.DW: Is submission to Gimpsy free?MC: Gimpsy provides a free submission option. There are no strings attached – totally unconditional. However, as the queue for review is now very long (by the way, we operate on a strict 'first come first serve' basis), a free submission is likely to be reviewed after 4 months or more. As we are becoming more and more popular – the queue is likely to lengthen much more.DW: You must get tons of spam submissions. How do you effectively deal with this?MC: First of all, we ensure that it would be nearly impossible to use a script to submit sites to Gimpsy.

Only hand-submit works. Then, we make it very clear that we are very stringent in our Editorial process and we will NOT tolerate spam. So far, I can't say that it has been a major problem.DW: You do offer a paid option as well. What are the advantages of using the paid option as opposed to the free option.MC: Our approach to the paid option is to provide maximum value for money. Thus, we do not just promise (with a full money back guarantee) that a decision will be taken within 72 hours, but we also offer additional benefits too. For example, every site accepted through the paid option is promoted to a prime position for 90 days. Interestingly, every one knows how important it is to rank high in the Search Engine result page, but they don’t think that the same applies to directories!

Our internal statistics show that nearly 70% of all the referrals went to sites listed in the first 10 places. Thus, a paying site will not only be included faster, indexed by Search Engines sooner and enjoy a higher PageRank, but is likely to get many referrals too. In addition, we also provide 90 days free use at the Strongest Links site, which in itself is worth nearly as much as the current submission rate of $40. DW: Besides the paid submission option, are there any advertising opportunities on Gimpsy and if so, how do they work?MC: Here, too, we have chosen a unique model, which we believe is the best for users, Site Owners and Gimpsy.

It works as follows:Every category has a limited number of prime positions, to be auctioned on a monthly basis. Site owners can submit a sealed bid for one of the available places. On the 1st of the month, all the bids are opened and ranked according to the bidding sums. The 1st place goes to the highest bidder, second place to the next one and so forth, until all the available places have been taken. All other sites are randomly reshuffled. That’s it. The winning sites will enjoy a significant boost in visitors – without any additional payment.DW: Is Gimpsy's mission to be different in every aspect? Why not use Pay Per Click (PPC) like everyone else?MC: I see you want to extract some venom from me… OK, then :). We do not believe in the PPC model - it is a recipe for dishonesty.

Every day thousands of Site Owners are losing vast amounts of money to PPC engine owners, paying for non-existing 'users'. I am not saying that all the PPC owners are blatantly cheating, although some certainly do, and I have experienced it myself. The problem is that the PPC system makes it so easy for competitors to harm each other, by using either automated scripts or employing an army of ‘clickers’ from India, as was recently revealed. They get paid, the PPC owner gets paid and only the Site Owner is left with a hole in his pocket. I believe that the Gimpsy model is superior and hope it will become a blueprint for others too.DW: What are your future plans for Gimpsy? In other words, where do you see Gimpsy in a year from now?MC: Gimpsy's Mission Statement states: Gimpsy will be the definitive guide to the World Wide Web virtual city.

This encapsulates our desire to be the first choice for every user that wants to do something online – and doesn't know which sites provide it. Thousands of people are bookmarking us every month, and the trend upwards is unmistakable. I expect that trend to continue – and to gain momentum. We may not fulfill the mission statement in a year – but we intend to enjoy every moment of the journey!DW: Many thanks for your detailed response.MC: The pleasure is all mine!

Proper Submissions

Proper Directory Submissions - Part I

Author: David Wallace
Part of the overall process of submitting one's website to the search engines is getting your site listed in the top directories. Directories are different from standard search engines in that a search engine will query a database of indexed websites before it produces results and a directory is a database of websites that have been arranged by subject. Directories do indeed have search functions but the websites are still listed in specific categories of which one may search by drilling through the various subjects the directory offers.

Therefore, the submission process to a directory differs from that of submitting to regular crawler based search engines. With a regular search engine, one will submit their home page URL and then their crawler will visit that site as well as follow other links it finds from the home page, forming its own title and description of each page. A directory does not work this way. They do not crawl your website and they are not able to decipher the content of the site. Rather one will select the most appropriate category related to the subject matter of the site and then submit, suggesting a title, description and any other information the directory may require. This is why it is very important to submit correctly the first time.

Not only will if affect the way the site will appear when people are searching but it is often times difficult to get it changed at a later date. The format for submitting will work with most directories but we will also look at some specific requirements of directories as well. While there are many directories on the Internet, we will only be exploring the top ones here which are Yahoo!, Looksmart, The Open Directory, Gimpsy, GoGuides.org, IllumiRate, JoeAnt, Skaffe, Web-Beacon, WebSavvy, Web World, Wherewithal/Xoron, WoW and Zeal. First let us look at how to properly submit in general and then look at some specific requirement at each directory listed above. Now before we begin, it will be assumed that you have already optimized your site for good positioning on the crawler-based engines.

This will help us in category selection as well as what title and description to use when submitting. If you have not yet optimized your website, you'll need to do so.The first step is to select the most appropriate category. For an example, we will use a site that we own and operate called "Arizona Builders' Zone." To select a category, you will first need to know which keywords or phrases (combination of keywords) are most important or relevant to your business. For our example site, the most important phrases that we want to target are as follows:"Arizona builders""Arizona construction""Arizona contractors"Sure we can target many others, but these are the most important in regards to this site.

Also keep in mind that with a directory you are limited to having one page (usually your home page) included. There are rare cases where a directory will include other pages of your site in different categories but this does not happen often. It is also important to understand that in the search engine optimization (SEO) process, one can really only effectively promote two to three keyword phrases at the most for each page of the website. To select a category, simply go to the directory you want to submit to and conduct a search using your most important keywords or phrases. You will then see one or more categories displayed along with in some cases actual websites that are listed in those categories.

If more than one category is listed, you can explore each one and view the websites that are listed there. If you have competitors listed there, then you most likely want to be listed as well. The bottom line is to submit to the category that is best related to your business.Once you locate a category, log it somewhere. This is so you can go back at a later date and see if your site was listed or not. With some directories you will receive an email response on whether your site was listed or not providing that you supply a valid email address when submitting. With others, you will have to manually check to see if your site is listed which is why it is a good practice to make a note of which directories you submitted to as well as to which categories. Now that you have located the proper category, you will look for a link somewhere on the page that will take you to a submission form.

Most directories will work this way. Some will have a standard submission form that you then have to supply a path to the category you want to be listed in, but none of the ones we are dealing with in this article work that way. The three basic things that most directories will ask for is a title, description and maybe a list of keywords. These are the three elements we will cover.Title – With crawler-based search engines, it is common practice to include you keywords in your title tag. For example, The Arizona Builders' Zone has the following title tag:You can see that we have our three most important phrases represented but we will not submit the same thing to a directory. Instead, only submit the company or website name. In this case it would be "Arizona Builders' Zone."

With a directory, we are dealing with the human element meaning that an actual human will be reviewing your site, deciding whether or not it will be included in the directory as well as what its title and description will be. Directories only want either the company or website name listed. If you submit the title as "Arizona Contractors, Construction, Home Improvement and Real Estate Resources - Arizona Builders' Zone" the editor will either change it to the company name or worse delete it because you did not follow the rules. Remember that most of these editors are volunteers and have to deal with many submissions, a lot of which are spam. So make their life as easy as possible by submitting in the proper way.

Description –A lot of times one will simply copy the meta description tag and submit that to the directory. However this is not the recommended thing to do as some editors will reject it because they want you to come up with an original description; one that is of a unbiased third-person view rather than a sales pitch. They are looking for descriptions that inform one of what the site contains or is about rather than something like, "We are the best!", or "A leader in..." and so forth and so on.For our example site, we have already written not only a description that is used in the meta description tag but one for directories as well and have included it in the html of the home page in the form of a comment tag.

This provides an easy reference for us when submitting to directories and because it is in the form of a comment tag, crawler-based search engines will not pick it up.Here is the difference between the two descriptions, the first being the meta description tag and the second being the "directory friendly" description:"The largest directory of Arizona builders, contractors and home improvement companies plus resources and information on the Arizona construction and real estate industry."and"A directory of builders, contractors and home improvement companies in Arizona. Offers resources and information on the Arizona construction and real estate industry."The differences are subtle but enough to make it original and it does not make any boasts such as "The largest directory..."

This is the description that we would submit to a directory whereas the meta description tag is the description that a crawler based search engine will pick up. You can write a description in the same way and then place it in a comment tag in between the and tag in your html. When submitting your site, simply select "View Source" from your browser's tool bar, and the code is right there. If you submit your description keeping these principles in mind, it is most likely that the editor will not change it. If you find after your site is listed that the editor re-wrote your description in a way that is not to your liking, then you will have to try to contact them through an email link or resubmit hoping they will see your changes.

Odds are though that if you submit a good description in the first place, they will leave it be.Keywords –Sometimes a directory will allow you to submit a list of keywords. If they do, simply submit a short list of single keywords separated by a space. Do not submit an exhaustive list of repetitive phrases as they will most likely be rejected.

You can list these as a comment tag right under the comment tag for your "directory friendly" description in your code. For our example site, it looks like this:As you can see it is short and each word is listed only once. The only directories mentioned in this article that allow you to submit keywords are IllumiRate, WebSavvy, Web Word and Wherewithal/Xoron. This is as far as we will cover this subject because it is really not that vital to the success of your directory submissions.

Proper Directory Submissions

Proper Directory Submissions - Part II

Now for some specific requirements and techniques for each directory listed above.Yahoo!Yahoo! charges $299 on an annual basis to be listed in their directory. You can still submit to some non-profit categories for free but there is not much chance that a Yahoo! editor will ever get to your submission and review it. Therefore even if the category you want to be listed in has a free submit option, it is recommended that you pay the $299 and you will be listed in 7-10 business days.Make sure that when you submit that you are not already listed, that no portion of your site is under construction or broken and that your site is browser and user friendly.

If it does not meet any of these requirements, Yahoo! may reject it while keeping your $299 submission fee.LooksmartLooksmart is a pay per click directory meaning that you have to create an account with a budget to submit your listing and then you will be charged a "per click" charge every time someone clicks on your listing. They charge you a set up fee of $29 for each listing and per click fees start at $0.15. The benefit of being listed in Looksmart is that MSN displays Looksmart Listings in their search results. If your site is non-profit, you may be able to submit for free to Looksmart owned Zeal whose listings also show up in Looksmart.

The Open DirectoryThe Open Directory Project (ODP) is comprised of volunteer editors all over the world who are responsible for one or more categories of the directory. Therefore once you submit to a specific category, it is the responsibility of the editor assigned to that category to review and approve or decline your listing. Some editors are more diligent than others so it is hard to determine when your site will get listed if it gets listed at all. It seems as of late that it has become more difficult to get listed in ODP. There is a website where you can check the status of your submission. It can be found at http://resource-zone.com/ and you would want to submit to the "Site Submission Status" topic.

Top level editors are pretty quick to respond to your post.GoGuides.orgGoGuides was started from former editors of the Go.com GoGuides that was killed after Disney decided to drop out of the portal race. Like ODP, it is comprised of volunteer editors that are responsible for specific categories in the directory. There are two ways to submit to this directory. One is to pay a one-time fee of $39.99 where your site is guaranteed to be listed in two business days or become an editor yourself. You have to take and pass a test proving you have some experience submitting sites to a directory before you are approved as an editor.

Once you are an editor, you can add sites to the category for which you applied to; they are added instantly to the directory. If you want to submit a site to a category in which you do not have editing privileges, you can add to your own category and then move it to another category where you will then have to wait for that editor to approve your submission. As your editor level increases, you can apply to edit more categories.JoeAntJoeAnt was also started by former Go.com GoGuides editors and is comprised of volunteer editors that are responsible for specific categories in the directory. Like GoGuides.org, there are two ways to submit to this directory. One is to pay a one time fee of $39.99, the other is to become an editor.

There is no test to take to become an editor. You simply apply, choose the category you want to edit and then are approved via email response. You can then add sites to your assigned category. If you want to submit a site to a category in which you do not have editing privileges, JoeAnt has a forum that you can post to, asking other editors to list the site. As your editor level increases, you can apply to edit more categories.IllumiRateThere is no cost to submit your site to IllumiRate. They have considered adding an expedited submission for a fee but have not done so at this present time. Submissions made by the public must follow the guidelines included on the submission form. Sites using promotional slogans in the title or description or a series of keywords for the title or description will be bounced.

Duplicate submissions are automatically rejected and spammers will have all of their submissions deleted. You can also become an editor of IllumiRate and then add sites to the directory which are then approved by editors higher up in the hierarchy. You must first take a test and then be approved. Additionally, webmasters, site owners, SEOs, SEMs, etc., who become editors receive banner impression credits for each action performed. These credits may be used to start a banner ad campaign once the editor has accrued 150 credits.

The number of credits earned per action increases as an editor is promoted up the levels.SkaffeIn October of 2003, the 5 owners of GoGuides had a irreconcilable disagreement that split three of them off to create a new directory called Skaffe. It originally used the exact same structure and database as GoGuides and therefore it is very similar to GoGuides as far a the submission process goes.Web-BeaconAnd the saga continues. This directory was birthed out of a friendly split between the two remaining owners of GoGuides after it split up into two directories in October 2003. It is very similar to GoGuides and so the submission process for GoGuides is pretty much going to be the same here.

Wherewithal/XoronThere are two ways to submit to this directory - one is the standard way of finding the correct category, submitting and waiting for approval, and the other is to become an editor yourself. Once you are an editor, you can "grab" any category that does not already have an editor. Once you have this category, you can instantly add sites to it.ZealZeal is owned by Looksmart and is comprised of volunteer editors as well as Looksmart's employee editorial staff.

Submission to Zeal is free but you can only submit if you are a non-profit business or website. All commercial categories would require submission through Looksmart's CPC listing service described above.By following proper etiquette in directory submission, you will not only insure that your submissions are accepted but that they are listed in a way that will give the site its best chance at exposure and visibility.

Low Quality Directories

Low Quality Web Directories
Author: Aaron Wall
Low Quality Web Directories27 July 2004Why are Directories Important?Since search algorithms are just programs without intelligence they must rely upon the intelligence of humans to structure their search results. Some search engines such as Google make it extremely rewarding for a webmaster to list their site in many different directories. Building links from many different websites from different IP ranges meshes your site into the fabric of the web. Listing your site in a few dozen directories also strengthens your websites relevancy and position. If some of your more powerful links are not indexed for one reason or another your site can still be considered relevant by search engines on many topics based on the fact that you have inbound links from many different IP ranges.

Traffic from Web DirectoriesUsually you will not get much traffic from most directories. I have a site in a fairly popular category of the Yahoo! and DMOZ directories. This month so far they have provided 31 and 24 visitors each. The single biggest reason to list in directories is that they help search engines understand what your site is about and help improve your relevancy. Recent Directory ProblemsGoogle AdSense makes it extremely lucrative to become a middle man selling traffic. A large number of websites are polluting the web with no information, just a bunch of pages designed to sell Google AdSense ads.

Many directories state that they accept free submissions so they can build more inbound links and then they never accept any sites.I have a directory of directories so I keep up with all the new directories and know where to submit clients websites. I get a ton of submissions every day and get to see a bunch of directories.Good DirectoriesSome niche specific directories do not provide static text links but drive a significant amount of prequalified traffic to your site. Many niche specific directories are works of love and provide free listings. Many directories are focused on quality and provide static text links to your site.

These directories not only help send direct traffic but also improve your sites relevancy in search results.Directories Who List AnyoneSimilar sites existed in the past by the name of free for all (FFA) pages. Some unscrupulous money hungry parties accept any site that pays them. They place the sites in semi organized categories and call it a directory. These type of directories are just there to collect money. You pay them, they spend a minimal amount of cash renting links from one or two sites and collect money.

Eventually these types of directories get delisted from Google and when they get banned you wasted your money.Duplicate Empty Directories Created to Sell AdSenseI have had about 20 directories similar to spain-directory.com and splendes.com submitted to my site. Not a single one of them listed any websites. In fact I even tried to submit a site to one of them and the site submission page was broken.Sites such as emfind.com, pearlfind.com, moonfind.com, findeyes.com, beyondfind.com, and findww.com all look the exact same and were submitted to my directory within the past week.AdSense DirectoriesAdtsar.co.uk is literally a directory of AdSense ads. When that site was submitted to my directory the description they used was "Browse and search adwords for the latest offers which are relevant to you!"Article SummaryAdSense and cheap link rentals have made it easy to create garbage directories to collect your money.
Since directories are becoming such a profitable business model the number of directories will continue to steadily grow throughout the rest of the year.If they are not spending money advertising or building their brand or if you are unsure if a directory is sketchy ask around at a few directories before spending any money.- by Aaron Wall, author of The Search Engine Optimization Book.

Wow Directory

Interview of Bruce Stone of Wow Directory

Author: Aaron Wall
Interview of Bruce Stone of Wow Directory June 7 2004Hello Bruce,Thanks for taking the time to let me ask you a few questions. Lets get into the questions...When did you come up with the idea for Wow Directory?WoW is a long time dream come true. I have wanted my own directory since I started editing around eight years ago but my work schedule would never allow the time. I retired a year ago and started researching topic structures and directories and what webmasters wanted in a directory.

From that research WoW was developed and launched March 26th. What sets the Wow Directory apart from other directories?WoW is actually 15,173 Local and Regional directories that contain the entire topic structure of the general directory with 16,484 topics. All submissions when possible are placed the location of the base of operation. They are then automatically cross-referenced to the state as well as the general directory. For example a submission to Albany, New York will be in Albany, New York and in the general directory giving the site three active links.

We also use static links and with over 249 million available topics the number of submissions in each topic will be less then the average directory. My research has shown that large topic structures provide poor indexing of websites and frequently will not give the submitter links. If you ask a webmaster why they submit to a directory the majority will tell you they want links and search engine submission. From day one WoW was structured to give the webmaster what they need from a directory.

How are you able to process search engine submissions so much faster than other directories? Can people submit multiple pages of their site to the Wow Directory? As your directory fills up how do you intend to combat duplicate entries into your directory while still being able to provide that amazing level of customer support? The way we process submissions is quite different then most directories. First and foremost we expect the submitter to make a reasonable effort to submit by our submission guidelines. Those who submit with flamboyantly promotional titles and keyword strings for descriptions are rejected on sight rather then taking the ten minutes to edit their submission.

This in itself saves an enormous amount of time and gets the submissions from webmasters who make a reasonable effort to follow our submission guidelines into the directory quickly. Editors work right out of my home office on a voice operated computer system designed for me since I’m a quadriplegic and have very low hand function. This also speeds work up considerably when you’re used to the command structure.

We use multiple monitors so we can view the website and edit the directory at the same time without opening and closing windows. Submissions can be processed by dictation at an amazing rate but it does take several weeks to learn the voice dictation system and for it to learn your voice patterns and correctly interpret them.Yes, we do allow page submission from websites as long as they are unique pages and can be placed in a separate topic. We recently added a website that sells promotional products that had a unique domain for every type of product to all the corresponding topics.

This is done on a case by case basis and the page must be considered an asset to the topic and directory user and will be decided by one editor, myself to keep the policy as fair and consistent as possible. Duplicate submissions are detected by the script. All URL’s are edited to use the same format and a duplicate will automatically by rejected upon submission or when edited to conform to our style guidelines.

Currently you have a free submission option for any type of website. Do you intend to continue this indefinitely?WoW will always be a free service. We support the directory through modestly priced express reviews, advertising and sponsored submissions that we also treat as advertising. Sponsored submissions are allowed reasonable anchor text instead of the formal directory style guidelines.

They will be limited to no more then 5 per topic. When our database is sufficiently developed we will be opening it up as an open directory source. This technology is already in place and can allow for real time updating instead a waiting for an updated dump. In other words a site will be on all users’ sites the day it is submitted. You built a comprehensive topical structure early. Why did you do it this way? How will you combat the changing meaning of language over time?I think most of this was covered in question number two but to add to it. A lot of research went into what topics will and will not be used by studying topic structures.
My experience over the years has shown me that topic structures built as you go ends up being excessively large and highly disorganized; especially in science areas that can be complex. As for how we will combat the changing of meaning of language over time. WoW is a development project that will never be completed since the internet is in a constant state of evolution. We have over 200,000 topics indexed by Google today landing us just below DMOZ and making us a very powerful webmaster resource but tomorrow we could have no indexed pages and will have to adapt to keep up with the continuing internet evolution.

If I wanted to start a new focused or general directory today what tips would you recommend?Give the webmasters what they need. Links, good and fast service and as many pages index by the search engines as conceivably possible. This generates traffic, something directories have been poor in delivering. You’re not doing the webmaster a favor by accepting their site. They are doing you the favor by developing the database for you.

I don’t ever expect to see a profit from WoW but if I can build a quality and useful directory in a time when profiteering low quality directories are breeding like rabbits my dream will be fulfilled. Thanks for the interview Bruce. Webmasters can submit their sites to Wow Directory for free at http://www.wowdirectory.com.- by Aaron Wall, owner of Search Marketing Info

Branding a Directory

Branding a Directory
Author: Aaron Wall
Branding a DirectoryApril 2004How do I Create a Successful Directory? There are a few things which are important to do when creating a directory. To maximize the long term success of your directory you want to ensure:Search engines can index your inner pages. If you only have one page show up in search results then you are missing out on most of your potential traffic. Search engines can index the links going to external sites.

Few people use directories compared to search engines. A large portion of the link price is going to be based on how search engines evaluate the links. Your directory should be focused enough to be of high quality. Your directory should have an original brand, feel, or idea. Your directory should not have a cheap feel to it. ie: it should feel like a directory and not an ad haven... Search Engines Indexing the PagesThis is vitally important. With so few people searching through directories today a large portion of the traffic comes directly from people finding the directory pages within search results. This is some of the traffic which justifies the fees of a listing cost. This is some of the traffic which is buying more listings.

This is some of the traffic which clicks ads to make the directory revenue.Search Engines Can Index Outbound LinksSince few people use directories to surf the web a new type of implied value has been placed within their links. When Galaxy and Yahoo! came out there were no great search sites on the market. That is a large part of what led to Yahoo's success. In the decade since the inception of Yahoo!, search has evolved from non existent to one of the world's most powerful industries.

That is why Yahoo! spent nearly $2 billion buying search products in less than a year. These search engines need to be able to see, read, and evaluate these links. These links are fundamental in telling search engines what our sites are about. Without indexable links directories must create a ton more direct traffic to justify inclusion fees.Directory Focus & QualityIt takes a ton of effort to create a comprehensive directory of the web. This is why Yahoo! charges hundreds of dollars per year.

This is why having over 50,000 editors is still not enough for DMOZ.If a directory is to be done correctly, it needs to be done a better way. That way might mean that you create a business model which is functional and economic (as John Scott of BlueFind hopes to do), or it may mean that you need to keep the directory focused enough to be able to be the best directory for that particular web segment.Branding a DirectoryYahoo! - great name, one of the first directories...branding DMOZ - the completely free directory...world's largest directory...open source...branding Gimpsy - the verb based directory...branding Business.com - the business directory...easy to remember, focused...branding WoW Directory - the most categories of any directory on the web...branding Biz Directory - the directory offering a free script which is powering many other directories...smart...not necessarily branding, but this is the type of idea which can help offset a lack of brand development.

There are many people out there using an absolutely free directory script to power sites which have no branding distinction or even any real angle to them. They simply create pages which look much like other pages. These sites may make some revenue off of AdSense or similar programs, but they are a generic service.Selling AdsMany people see the idea of paid submissions and want to immediately lick their chops.

I told one guy I would help promote his directory in exchange for free submissions and he told me to go screw myself. I know that I am a damn good SEO and I could announce his site to hundreds (or more like thousands) of people, thus adding value to his directory. He was adding up the value of my listings at $25 each incorrectly. You see, any idiot can buy a directory script. Any idiot can get a few paid submissions, but most people are not focused enough in their ideas, and most do not know enough about branding to actually make their listings worth $25 - $50. Of course you can help boost your PageRank by renting links, but again, most people who know nothing about building a quality product, branding, or SEO also know nothing about link rentals.

The Problem with Only Listing AdsThe real problem of his business model (or the business model of any general directory that wants to charge for all listings) is that they make it hard for some sites to get listed. Some of the best sites on the web are a labor of love. Some of these people lose money every day giving away their knowledge - this is why people flock to the internet. To read the views of these people. These sites are the sites which add value to a general directory. They are why people would want to use your directory. They are why people would want to link to your directory.

If you require a payment for listing any and all sites (link or cash) you can guarantee that your directory will be missing out on some of the best stuff on the web. Short term these directories can make money, but they fail to build value. If you fail to give people a reason to want to surf your directory, and you fail to give them a reason to want to link to your directory then they won't. If you have a topic that interests you and there are no good directories for it on the web, it is a good idea to become the first. I am trying to create a directory of these good types of directories. Feel free to submit your quality directory for free inclusion into the Directory Archives.- by Aaron Wall, owner of Search Marketing Info

Directories help search engines

How Directories Help Search Engines

Author: Mario Sanchez
How Directories Help Search EnginesAt the beginning of the web era, users would go to directories to find sites relevant to their interests. In fact, Yahoo!, the web's number one destination, started as a directory. Nowadays, most users rely on search engines, not directories, to find what they're looking for. When search engines started to become popular, they relied on web pages' 'keyword metatags' to determine the topic and relevance of the page (the keyword metatag is a section within a web page's HTML code where webmasters can insert words that are relevant to the page's content).

Webmasters discovered that by stuffing their meta tags with popular search terms repeated hundreds of times, they could propel their pages to the top of the search results.Search engines caught up to the abuse and decided to ignore the meta tags and rely instead on web page copy. Webmasters then started to overstuff their page copy with popular search terms, often writing them in the same color as the web page's background, so that they could be detected by search engines while being invisible to users.Again, search engines discovered the trick and decided that the best way to rank a web page's content and its topical relevance was to rely on inbound links from other pages.

The rationale behind this is that it is much more difficult to influence other people to link to you than it is to manipulate your own web page elements. In fact, inbound links are the foundation of Google's Pagerank™ algorithm. There are several ways to get inbound links, among them writing articles that include your bylines with a link to your page, exchanging links, and listing your site in directories.Listing your sites in good directories is probably the best way to get quality links that are highly valued by the search engines.

Since directories rely on human editors who enforce strict criteria to list a site, and since directories organize the information in highly focused categories, they are an invaluable resource for search engines to measure the quality and the relevance of a web page.In summary, directories are important not because they generate significant traffic (they don't), but because they are given great importance by the search engines to qualify and rank web pages, and to determine their topical relevance.

You should definitely list your site with quality directories if you want to increase your chances of success with the search engines. For more search engine tips, read the SEOBook. You can freely reprint this article provided that you include the following resource box:

Directory Struggles

The Struggles of a Directory

Author: Aaron Wall
The Struggles of a DirectoryDecember 2003No single person will ever know enough about the world around them to create a comprehensive global directory. We are forced to rely on one another to help build catalogs of the internet. As time passes and the data pool grows the gap between code and man seems to expand.GoGuidesGoGuides came about after Disney's large internet blunder. When Disney shut down some of its top editors decided to make an independent directory.

All was running smooth for the first few years, but it was not to last.On October 27, GoGuides announced data theft as Skaffe split off due to a disagreement between ownership. It took GoGuides over a month to get everything in order... just to sell it. Recently a quick glimpse at their home page would reveal that they were on sale in a silent auction with a $10,000 minimum bid. They are one of the top dozen directories on the web and there were no takers. That low price, and the fact that no sale was announced shows how little we value information distribution, or how economically challenging it is to craft a quality
directory.

ScalabilityDirectories are in some ways the building blocks of search engines, which oddly enough...they are forced to compete with. Much of the spam which plagues search engines has a hard time making its way into the directories. Unlike manipulative junk spam rings, which can be set up nearly free, the costs of directories help ensure their quality. The fact that they are not automated...the fact that a human reviews allows their links to be the building blocks of search engines. Some sites fall between the cracks or switch ownership, but on the whole a large number of directory links into a website tell the search engines "this site is good."

All the work of these directories helps search engines provide more accurate results, at virtually no cost to the search engines. Google, for example, places double weighting on the Open Directory Project by creating a clone of it titled the Google Directory.Directories require a ton of resources to operate. They can only dream of the free scalability they help lend to search engine algorithms. The largest directories only have a few million websites, as compared to billions of documents in the largest search engines.Financial ProblemsMany directories may list commercial sites rates as low as a one time $20 - $40 fee (actually sometimes free). A human editor has to review the website (not just the page) and verify listing details and category. Compare this to the fact that search engines can sell automated ads which sometimes exceed $30 - $60 PER CLICK!!!

The financial design of the internet make having a web directory as much of a burden as an asset. Some say Google will be worth $20 billion and GoGuides is not even worth $10 thousand. Many reporters and economists are expecting the Google IPO to be the economic catalyst which sparks the entire US economy. How is a company not worth $10,000 to compete with that?LooksmartNo directory shows what a financial struggle it is to categorize the web by hand better than Looksmart. In the last few years they have literally changed their business model about a half dozen times.

Despite all the searching for what works (and having the free Zeal resource), today they are coming up on hard times. On January 15 MSN is dumping LookSmart as a partner because they feel the current relationship is hurting their search relevancy.LookSmart will be loosing about 2/3 of its revenue and is going to shed about half of its staff. All this within about a year of them finally finding profitability.YahooYahoo has been spending heavily to brand its search, but its directory which made it popular is now more of a novelty.

Yahoo essentially decided relevancy of the directory no longer mattered when they began to place irrelevant Overture ads on the pages. Worse yet, many of these ads get indexed by search engines. The Google search for Cleveland SEO shows that currently the top result is the Cleveland Zoos page from the Yahoo directory.DMOZEndless complaint have crossed my ears about DMOZ. Many argue that the Open Directory is no long open. In fact, a person can not even make a positive remark about them without spurring on pages of counter arguments. An open acknowledgement to problems would be that they even have a public support forum to handle complaints. I personally have submitted multiple awful sites that got quickly listed.

Some others (which were better in my opinion) I have concluded will never be listed. With the power placed in the hands of a few people, it is not hard for some editors to reshape the local web community around their business for self profit.WWW Virtual DirectoryEven on a smaller scale, the WWW virtual directory created by Tim Berners-Lee (founder of the web) is having some problems. Lets take for example the 4 front page categories under the computing subheading.1 is part of the huge internet.com collection of sites...which may be ok, but 1 is a newer smaller directory 2 (1 2) are 404 error pages Future PredictionsWith the recent change to the Google algorithm and the concept of grading the web based on local link structuring I predict many small directories will be popping up in the next few years.

One way or another directories are needed to help organize the internet. As directories come and go, those which will be able to face the test of time are those which tackle the web from a unique perspective (black hat seo) are small and focused enough to be maintained by a couple workers (black hat seo) or are done out of hobby vice as a business (black hat seo) Subliminal messages (black hat seo)...I think most enthusiasts should have their own topic specific directory which they can share with the rest of the web, even if its just for fun.

Surely something interests you!Going One Step FurtherI am also announcing my launching of a new directory of directories. The goal of this directory will be a free webmaster resource and web search tool which will list most major web directories broken down by category. Inclusion is free. My goal is to make it easier for webmasters to have a comprehensive resource of places where they should list their website. Ideally this will help save time and make the internet more functional as a whole. The name? Directory Archives .com- by Aaron Wall, owner of Search

Links pages can become a directory

Turn Your Links Page Into a Topical Directory

Author: Mario Sanchez
Turn Your Links Page Into a Topical DirectoryTo rank well in the search engines you need incoming links. Search engines consider an incoming link a vote for your page. That link will be more valuable if it comes from a site that is somehow related to your site's topic, and if the link anchor text includes your keywords. In a previous article, we discussed reciprocal linking and outlined a process to get high quality inbound links.

This article will explain how to organize your reciprocal outbound links to provide greater value and mutual benefit to you and your link partners. It is normal practice to place reciprocal outbound links in a special page called "Links". My suggestion is to turn that "Links" page into a high-quality, specialized topical directory. The reason is that "Links" pages are not very well regarded by search engines, especially if they are just a random, unorganized collection of links, with no description and little relation to each other.

Good directories, on the other hand are especially important to search engines, due to the fact that they help them analize what a web page is about and assign those pages the proper relevance under certain search terms. For example, if you are a real estate broker, you can call your Links page "Real Estate Resource Directory" and populate it with reciprocal links to non-competitive industry-related sites. Examples of non competitive sites in this case would be: home inspector sites, mortgage broker sites, property appraiser sites, handymen sites, roofing company sites, etc. You can create special sections for each of these categories to make your directory more organized and easier to navigate.

Since all of these sites will have placed a reciprocal link to your site, you will gain a great deal of search engine visibility when the search engines crawl those sites, plus your page will receive a relevance boost under real estate related search terms.Remember that you have the prerrogative to choose your link partners. The key here is to resist the temptation to exchange links with everybody and anybody. To search engines, link quality is more important than link quantity. Choose as link partners only those that will add value to your directory and help increase your topical relevance with the search engines.

A high quality directory of reciprocal links will benefit you because more people will want to link to you, helping you get more links. It will also benefit your link partners because your directory page will most likely achieve decent Pagerank, which will make your outbound links more valuable.Your last steps are:Generate adequate description and keyword meta tags for your directory page (although meta tags haven't been taken into account by search engines lately, Yahoo! is apparently paying attention to them again).

Link to your Directory page from your homepage. To do this, it is better not to use the anchor text "Links" but instead to use the word "Directory", and to provide more specifics in the Title attribute of the link's HTML code (in our example, the HTML code would read: Directory. Don't title your page "Links". Instead name it under your topic plus the word 'directory' in your Title tag (in our example, the HTML code for the page title would read: ). Make sure that your Directory page is picked up by the search engines.

If your homepage is crawled regularly and you have placed a link to your Directory in your homepage, it will be easily found and added to the S.E. index. If you are really serious about creating a reciprocal links directory, Arelis is probably the best tool you can use. Arelis is an excellent software product that scouts the web for you looking for potential link partners (as oppossed to just sorting through a manually-compiled directory, like other products).

Arelis still lets you contact your link partners manually, which results in better quality link partners than when a totally automated, impersonal process is used. You can freely reprint this article provided that you include the following resource box:

Quality Traffic

Driving qualified traffic using Directories

Author: Lee Traupel
Driving qualified traffic using Directories Some education is essential to enlighten you about this form of interactive marketing. Directories aren’t Search Engines; they are web sites or information portals which use analysts on staff to review submissions from companies who want to be listed in their Directory. Yahoo would be the penultimate example of this type of a portal. But there are literally thousands of other sites that group and list web sites based on their analysis criteria. Here are some tips garnered from years of providing these services to our clients.1) How do you find Directories? I don’t have an easy solution for you, as we’ve spent years developing and refining (ongoing) our own list of Directories.

But, look around on the Internet using Search Engines to find popular sites that list resources in your vertical market segment. 2) Directory listings are a great value, as they provide a long-term listing, unlike Search Engine rankings which are much more volatile. Once you achieve a listing you are typically locked into a Directory’s database for a very long time.3) Let’s start with the twenty-ton gorilla in this market, Yahoo! Spend time carefully reviewing their various categories, then take the plunge and use their “Business Express” service which costs just under $200. (USD) to submit your site.

Don’t, I repeat don’t submit unless you have carefully analyzed where you belong in their huge category selections; if you make a mistake you only have one chance to get a new or revised listing, as they aren’t very forgiving of those who don’t do their homework before submitting. 4) Be patient when submitting to Directories, as most are getting tens or hundreds of thousands of submissions per day – it will take 30-90 days to actually get listed.

Keep an accurate record of sites you have posted to and then check back 60-90 days later and resubmit if necessary, but don’t spam them, as this will not garner any results. 5) Never submit a site unless it is ready for primetime, with no broken links, under construction pages, incomplete text, graphics that aren’t loading properly, etc. Indexers are very busy, once they see a site which has problems they will click to the next entry on their list and your hard work is to no avail. 6) Be prepared with the proper marketing materials for this type of a campaign, including a working title for your site which is 6-8 words, several groups of keywords that are separated by commas and spaces of varying lengths, approx 10-20 and 30-75 keywords, and a longer description of your site which can be one to two sentences.7)

Part of the required expertise involved in this process is in the actual category selection – carefully select which category or categories where you think your site fits by looking at others in this category to determine if you fit into this classification. 8) Be aware we are seeing a shift to fee-based submissions to shortcut the process - Yahoo started the trend over a year ago, now LookSmart and other top tier Directories are starting to do the same. The tradeoff is of course minimizing time to market – we recommend using the commercial services to our clients. 9) Want to know if this process has actually done anything for you? Check your log files or web site analysis software and look at where your traffic is coming from. 10)

If you are getting significant traffic from a small list of Directories you may want to go back to their web site and pay for their premium listing services to drive more traffic. These enhanced listings services typically enable you to bold your listing or add graphical content which enhances the textual description, usually only for a few hundred dollars per year.
